Which Course Should I Choose?

EJMS has many different ensembles and courses, and every child at EJMS will have their own timetable for all the things that they are involved in. To help you find you way through our courses, here is a guide to some of the options available. If you have any further queries regarding courses or availability of lessons, please email the administrator for further information.

My child is 3, and is just starting their musical journey.

Register your child now for a place on the Musicianship course. Consider putting your child on the waiting list for an Early Starter course (15 minute individual lesson on violin or cello), or an Paired Lesson (30 minute paired lesson on violin or cello), or a Start to Play course (30 minute small group lesson on recorder or guitar) for when they reach the age of 5 to 6.

My child is 5, and is just starting their musical journey.

If they wish to start playing an instrument straight away, register them for an Early Starter course (15 minute individual lesson on violin or cello), or an Paired Lesson (30 minute paired lesson on violin or cello), or a Start to Play course (30 minute small group lesson on recorder or guitar). All these three courses also include a 30 minute Musicianship class.
If they do not wish to start playing an instrument straightaway, register them for a Musicianship course and bring them to one of our Come & Play events where we will help them choose which instrument they would like to learn (held in February and June).

My child is 7, and is ready to start playing an instrument.

Register your child now for a Full Course (30 minute individual lesson on any instrument and access to all other EJMS activities). As soon as they reach Year 2 they will be able to join the Ealing Children's Choir and a Fun Theory class.

My child is 8+, and wants to start playing an instrument.

Register your child now for a Full Course (30 minute individual lesson on any instrument and access to all other EJMS activities). They will immediately be able to join a Choir relevant to their age group, and attend a Theory class relevant to their experience. As they progress on their instrument we will guide them towards joining other ensembles.

My child already plays an instrument, but needs a new teacher.

Register your child now for a Full Course (30 minute individual lesson on any instrument and access to all other EJMS activities). They will be able to join any ensemble that is relelvant to their experience (we will help you work out which ones are most suitable). They will also be able to join a Choir relevant to their age group, and attend a Theory class relevant to their experience.

My child already has an instrumental lesson, but would like more playing experience.

Register your child now for an Ensemble Only Course (access to all EJMS ensemble activities). They will be able to join any ensemble that is relevant to their experience (we will help you work out which ones are most suitable). They will also be able to join a Choir relevant to their age group, and attend a Theory class relevant to their experience. Under our Bursary Scheme EJMS offers a free introductory term for this course.

My child wants to do more musical activities, but doesn't know which instrument to choose.

Register your child now for a Choir Course (Ealing Children's Choir for age 7-11, or Ealing Youth Choir for age 11-18). Bring them to one of our Come & Play events where we will help them choose which instrument they would like to learn (held in February and June). Under our Bursary Scheme the Choir courses qualify for a free introductory term. A Theory class can be added to this course for a small extra charge.

I want my child to take Music Exams.

Register your child now for a Full Course (30 minute individual lesson on any instrument and access to all other EJMS activities). We fully support children in taking Music Exams when they are ready to do so. When we enter a child for an exam we will give them extra support classes our Aural Coaches and our Accompanists. We have ABRSM Examiners visiting EJMS on the last two Saturdays of every term so that students can take their exams on the premises with the piano accompanist that they have been working with that term. We also offer support for children taking Trinity/Guildhall Examinations.

I want my child to take Music Exams, but they have an instrumental lesson outside EJMS.

Register your child now for an Ensemble Only Course (access to all EJMS ensemble activities). Under our Bursary Scheme this course qualifies for a free introductory term. For an extra charge we can offer children access to our extra support classes from our Aural Coaches and our Accompanists. They will also be able to take ABRSM Examinations on the premises on the last two Saturdays of every term.

My child wants to learn to play the piano.

We don't offer piano lessons at EJMS, as we concentrate our resources on teaching instruments that are able to play in musical ensembles. We believe that taking part in a ensemble makes a child a better musician, and it is fun! You can still register your child now for a Choir Course (Ealing Children's Choir for age 7-11, or Ealing Youth Choir for age 11-18), or bring them along to one of our Come & Play events (held in February and June) to see if their is another instrument that they would like to learn.

I'm an adult and I would like to join in as well!

Parents with a child registered at EJMS are welcome to register for the Adult Chorale, volunteer to help in the Cafe, or just enjoy a proper cup of coffee over your newspaper. Adults are also welcome to play in certain of the EJMS Ensembles. Please talk to the Music Director for more details.

THE CHOIRS AT EJMS

EJMS is proud to be the home of both the Ealing Children's Choir and Ealing Youth Choir.

Ealing Children's Choir was founded in the 1950's, and is now administered by Ealing Junior Music School. It provides girls and boys aged 6-11 with the opportunity of singing high-quality choral repertoire, in EJMS and local events as well as further afield. ECC has appeared on Sky TV and performed in large-scale concerts such as Benjamin Britten's War Requiem, Carl Orff's Carmina Burana and the world premiere of Paul Ayres's The Christ.

Other recent repertoire includes music by Bach, Handel and popular songs such as Yesterday, The Rhythm of Life, The Very Thought of You, Take the A-Train, and Shenandoah.

Ealing Children's Choir rehearses on Saturdays 10.30am.-11.30am. and new members are always welcome. The Choir is conducted by the Music Director, Felix McGonigal.

Ealing Youth Choir was founded in 1985 and is open to all singers aged 10-21 who enjoy a wide range of music-making. The choir has been on TV (London Tonight) and radio (Classic FM). Since 2004 it has been running as part of EJMS, rehearsing on Saturdays 11.30am-12.30pm.

We perform all kinds of music: by Purcell, Monteverdi, Lennon & McCartney, Bach, arrangements of popular songs, Vivaldi, spirituals, Britten, Ward Swingle, madrigals, improvisation and new compositions. In 1997 EYC won an award from the National Lottery's Arts for Everyone Scheme, facilitating a series of choral workshops with leading tutors (Mike Brewer of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, Ken Burton of the London Adventist Chorale, Keel Watson of English National Opera and Roddy Skeaping of City Waites).

The Choir is conducted by the Assistant Music Director, Elinor Corp. New members are always welcome.

The EJMS Adult Chorale is a newer addition the the EJMS family of choirs, and is a chamber choir formed of keen parents - all welcome. The Choir is conducted by the Chair of Trustees, John Hudson.

Welcome to the website of Ealing Junior Music School. I hope that you will see an opportunity here that will interest you and that you will consider joining us on Saturday mornings to learn more about music.

Perhaps you would like to learn an instrument? Or perhaps you already do and would like the chance to play in ensembles with other young people? Or maybe you would like to join an excellent children's choir?

At EJMS we offer all these opportunities and so much more. There is instruction in almost every kind of musical style ranging from classical through jazz to rock and pop music. You can learn an instrument, sing in a choir, play in a rock group, orchestra, wind band and many other kinds of ensemble. You can also learn music theory, take classes in musicianship and we offer musicianship groups for very young children. More details of our ensembles and courses are on this website.

All these activities take place in the relaxed and happy atmosphere that characterises EJMS. Our Cafe, set up every Saturday morning by the Friends of EJMS is the hub of our community. Many informal concerts take place here, and there is always a buzz of activity!

If you would like to come and see for yourself then please get in touch and make an appointment for a tour of EJMS on Saturday mornings at Twyford School, Acton. I look forward to welcoming you to the School.

FOUNDING TRUSTEES

DONATE TO EJMS

Thank you for thinking about making a donation to EJMS.

We passionately believe that we provide a vital service to the children of West London, many of whom have little access to music during the week at school.

EJMS is always very grateful for contributions large or small, as they enable us to do important extras such as replenish our stock of instruments for hire and improve our stock of music for our ever growing number of ensembles, as well as keep fees as low as possible for all of our students.

If you wish to donate to EJMS, you can do so by clicking the link below.
